Some people have even tried to pick up my <a href=\"http:\/\/shibashake.com\/dog\/shiba-inu-personality-good-bad-traits\">Shiba Inu<\/a> because they think he is so cute and so much like a <em>teddy-bear<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dogs however, have a very different style of communication than we do.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We hug each other to show affection, but when a dog places a paw over another dog\u2019s shoulders (<em>what we see as a hug<\/em>), it is commonly a <a href=\"http:\/\/shibashake.com\/dog\/the-dominant-dog-dealing-with-dominance-in-dogs\">dominance gesture<\/a>.<em> Humping<\/em>, which is similar to a hug for a dog, is also often used to show dominance.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is, we can <a href=\"http:\/\/shibashake.com\/dog\/hug-dog-teach-your-dog-to-enjoy-hugging\">train our dog to like hugs<\/a> by practicing handling exercises with him.<\/p>\n<div id='6027' class='wp-caption frame3 aligncenter' style='width:520px' ><div class='shiba-outer shiba-gallery' ><div class='shiba-stage' style='width:520px'><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/shibashake.com\/dog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_4714-520x390.jpg\" alt=\"Husky Puppy doing a handshake.\" width=\"520\" height=\"390\" class=\"size-large wp-image-6027\" \/><div class='wp-caption-text shiba-caption'>How to Meet a Dog<\/div><\/div> <!-- End shiba-stage --><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"alignspace\"><\/div>\n<h2>How to Successfully Meet New Dogs<\/h2>\n<div id='6258' class='wp-caption frame3 alignright' style='width:280px' ><div class='shiba-outer shiba-gallery' ><div class='shiba-stage' style='width:280px'><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/shibashake.com\/dog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/IMG_5028-280x210.jpg\" alt=\"Siberian Husky giving affection and kisses.\" width=\"280\" height=\"210\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6258\" \/><div class='wp-caption-text shiba-caption'>How to Successfully Meet New Dogs<\/div><\/div> <!-- End shiba-stage --><\/div><\/div>\n<ol>\n<li>Do not approach the dog and step into the dog\u2019s space. It is much better to let the dog approach you on his own.<\/li>\n<li>Walking towards the dog and talking in a high-pitched voice can be very threatening, and may cause shy dogs to become fearful. This may even trigger<strong><em> fear-aggression <\/em><\/strong>if the dog feels boxed in, and has nowhere to run.<\/li>\n<li>Instead, just stand still and use the time to ask the dog owner about his dog and whether you can meet him. During this time, make sure to ignore the dog.<br \/>\n<blockquote>\n<p>No talk, no touch, no eye-contact.<br \/>\n~~[<a href=\"http:\/\/shibashake.hubpages.com\/_srec\/hub\/Cesar-Milan-Dog-Training-the-Dog-Whisperer\">Cesar Millan, The Dog Whisperer<\/a>]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<div id='6025' class='wp-caption frame3 alignright' style='width:280px' ><div class='shiba-outer shiba-gallery' ><div class='shiba-stage' style='width:280px'><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/shibashake.com\/dog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_4708-280x210.jpg\" alt=\"Siberian Husky puppy lying on grass.\" width=\"280\" height=\"210\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6025\" \/><div class='wp-caption-text shiba-caption'>Do not approach the dog and step into his space.<\/div><\/div> <!-- End shiba-stage --><\/div><\/div>\n<li>Not giving the dog eye-contact is especially important because that can also be seen as a challenge.<\/li>\n<li>Let the dog sniff you and if he is calm and <a href=\"http:\/\/shibashake.com\/dog\/stop-your-dog-from-jumping-on-people\">not jumping<\/a>, you can meet him by giving his chest a brief scratch.<br \/>\n<strong>Do not try to pet the dog from above the head.<\/strong><br \/>\nThat is often seen as a threatening gesture and can trigger an aggressive reaction. Instead, approach from below the dog\u2019s head and scratch his chest.<\/li>\n<li>If the dog gets excited and starts jumping or <a href=\"http:\/\/shibashake.com\/dog\/puppy-biting-tips-solutions\">biting on your hands<\/a>, non-mark him (<strong>No <\/strong>or <strong>Ack-ack<\/strong>) and withdraw all of your attention. Fold up your arms, turn away from the dog, and remember not give him any eye-contact.<\/li>\n<li>Ignoring the dog, will help him to calm down. This will get the dog even more excited, and he may think that it is turning into<em> a fun game\/reward<\/em>. As a result his jumping and biting behavior will get reinforced and the next time he meets someone, he will jump and bite.<\/p>\n<p>Make sure to let your dog know that jumping and biting when meeting people is unacceptable behavior.<\/p>\n<p>Non-mark him for jumping, and lead him away from the person. You can stop after you have created some space and ask your dog for an alternate command, e.g.<em>Sit<\/em>. In this situation, I have better control over the environment, my friends are more willing to follow the meeting instructions, and they will also stick around for multiple test meetings.<\/p>\n<div class=\"alignright\">\n<a name=\"pd_a_6173426\"><\/a>\n<div class=\"CSS_Poll PDS_Poll\" id=\"PDI_container6173426\" style=\"display:inline-block;\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"PD_superContainer\"><\/div>\n<!-- Shiba add defer async -->\n<script defer async type=\"text\/javascript\" charset=\"UTF-8\" src=\"\/\/static.polldaddy.com\/p\/6173426.js\"><\/script>\n<noscript><a href=\"https:\/\/poll.fm\/6173426\">Take Our Poll<\/a><\/noscript>\n<\/div>\n<p>Some dogs may get frustrated when you try to lead them away from the meeting, and escalate their behavior.<\/p>\n<p><em>They may <a href=\"http:\/\/shibashake.com\/dog\/train-your-dog-to-stop-biting-on-the-leash\"> redirect their frustration onto the leash<\/a>, or onto you.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>What worked best for me in that situation, was to quickly end the meeting, as well as the fun walk. I would just march my dog home at a brisk pace.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It is also important to stay calm when your dog is meeting people.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When I got nervous or stressed, my dog would straight away sense that energy and escalate his jumping and biting behavior.<\/p>\n<p>To calm your dog down, remain calm and just remove him from the area.
