There are many evil threats that are just lurking around the corner, waiting to pounce on an unsuspecting canine. This is why I am starting a<br \/>\n<strong><em>Dog Threat-Down List<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height:50px;\"><\/div>\n<p>One of the darkest and nastiest family of evils is the  <em>Ripgut<\/em>, <em>Foxtail<\/em> and their ilk of <em>Bromus Malus<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>All of these Prime Evils have the capacity to kill dogs, and are not afraid to do so; in a seemingly detached, and indiscriminate manner. You may not know it, but chances are you have encountered these spawn of Evil before, and will do so again. <\/p>\n<div class=\"alignspace\"><\/div>\n<h2>Dog Threat-Down 1 &#8211; Ripgut, Foxtail, and Malus Bromus<\/h2>\n<p>What is this No-1 Evil on the dog threat-down? <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>WEEDS! <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Oh yes &#8211; the evil weeds &#8211; or <em>Bromus Malus<\/em> which just sounds a lot more cool and evil. Do not laugh or be fooled by their commonplace appearance, because the danger they pose to animals is very real.<\/p>\n<div id='4205' class='wp-caption frame3 aligncenter' style='width:474px' ><div class='shiba-outer shiba-gallery' ><div class='shiba-stage' style='width:474px'><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/shibashake.com\/dog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Ripgut-bromus-474x520.jpg\" alt=\"Ripgut grass or Ripgut bromus from Wikipedia.org.\" title=\"Ripgut-bromus\" width=\"474\" height=\"520\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4205\" \/><div class='wp-caption-text shiba-caption'>Ripgut grass or Ripgut bromus from Wikipedia.org.<\/div><\/div> <!-- End shiba-stage --><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"alignspace\"><\/div>\n<p><em>Bromus<\/em> is a particular species of grass that is common in temperate regions including the Mediterranean countries, and parts of Australia, and America. These <em>Bromus Malus<\/em> are common where I live, and they become <strong>very dangerous especially in the summer months<\/strong>. When the weather turns hot and the rains stop, the <em>Bromus<\/em> dry out and their seeds become sharp and pointy like <em>ninja shuriken<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>They can easily hook onto an unsuspecting dog&#8217;s fur, and <a href=\"http:\/\/shibashake.com\/dog\/dog-foot-care\">pierce through paws<\/a>, skin, ears, and eyes. <\/p>\n<p>Shiba Sephy once inhaled a foxtail, and soon after, started sneezing out blood as the insidious foxtail hook penetrated deeper and deeper into his nasal cavity.<\/p>\n<p>An emergency room visit and $400 later, we got back a groggy and out of sorts Sephy. The next day, he got sick because of secondary infection, likely from the anesthesia tube. This led to another <a href=\"http:\/\/shibashake.com\/dog\/shiba-diary-visit-to-the-vet\">fun-filled vet visit<\/a>. I usually do this several times throughout the summer to make sure that they are all gone. Both my dogs like to graze in the backyard, and eating these ninja shuriken grasses <a href=\"http:\/\/www.csupomona.edu\/~jcclark\/dogs\/foxtails.html\">can be deadly<\/a>.<\/li>\n<div class=\"alignspace\"><\/div>\n<div  class='wp-caption frame3 alignright' style='width:280px' ><div class='shiba-outer shiba-gallery' ><div class='shiba-stage' style='width:280px'>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B002GZ3KHM?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=shisha-20&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;creativeASIN=B002GZ3KHM\"><img border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/shibashake.com\/dog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/31U9wVQhIDL._SS400_-280x280.jpg\"><\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=shisha-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=B002GZ3KHM\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/>\n<div class='wp-caption-text shiba-caption'>SEBO vacuum cleaner from Amazon.com.<\/div><\/div> <!-- End shiba-stage --><\/div><\/div>\n<li>Vacuum often. My dogs also bring some of these seeds into the house, where they fall off, or get stuck on the carpets. Luckily, my SEBO vacuum does a great job at sucking away this particular brand of evil.<\/li>\n<p>SEBO is a bit on the pricey side, but I have been very happy with its performance. Both my dogs are double coated, so these pointy seeds easily get into their undercoat and stick there. <a href=\"http:\/\/shibashake.com\/dog\/itchy-dog\">Scratching<\/a> will cause the seeds to work their way into the dog&#8217;s skin. Off-leash walking in dry summer months (May-Sept in California) is not advisable. It took less than a minute for Sephy to stick his nose in the wrong place, and get the Foxtail lodged in his nose.<\/li>\n<div class=\"alignspace\"><\/div>\n<li><strong>If we suspect our dog has ingested, inhaled, or otherwise assimilated these dangerous seeds, bring him to the vet immediately.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One of the most awful things about these grasses is that they are everywhere. They are all over the hills where I hike, they are all over the parks, and they also live on the edge of neighborhood sidewalks. During the hot summer months, the seeds dry up and become extremely sharp. When a dog passes through these dry weeds, the seeds hook onto his fur, and can easily pierce through skin, paws, ears, and even eyes.
