{"id":101,"date":"2009-01-12T05:50:32","date_gmt":"2009-01-12T05:50:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/shibashake.com\/shibainublog\/?p=101"},"modified":"2009-01-12T05:50:32","modified_gmt":"2009-01-12T05:50:32","slug":"why-dogs-attack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shibashake.com\/dog\/why-dogs-attack\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Do Dogs Attack?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>I came across this really <a href=\"http:\/\/www.albertalocalnews.com\/news\/local\/Husky_to_be_put_down.html\">sad story<\/a> recently.<\/em> <\/p>\n<p>It is\u00a0about a rescue Siberian Husky, Chinook, who\u00a0is going to be put down because he <a href=\"http:\/\/shibashake.com\/dog\/dogs-children-prevent-dog-attacks\">attacked some children<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>As with most of these sad situations, the people most to blame are not the victims, or the dog, but rather <a href=\"http:\/\/shibashake.com\/dog\/are-you-a-good-dog-owner\">the dog owners<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Why do dogs attack?<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>There could be a variety of reasons, but most dog attacks can be avoided with proper management and supervision. <a href=\"http:\/\/shibashake.com\/dog\/why-get-a-dog\">Dogs do much for us;<\/a> the least we can do is to always keep them safe and happy.<\/p>\n<h2>1. If you need to leave your dog alone for a short period of time (&lt; 3 hours), then crate him or keep him in a secure and safe room. Remember to leave him with many interesting <a href=\"http:\/\/shibashake.com\/dog\/best-dog-toys\">chew toys and food toys<\/a> to keep him occupied. <\/p>\n<p>If you need to be away for long periods of time, then put him in a dog daycare or hire a pet sitter\/dog walker. <\/p>\n<p>In Chinook&#8217;s case,\u00a0he has escaped many times from the backyard. To keep him from further escapes, <a href=\"http:\/\/shibashake.com\/dog\/dog-shock-collar-good-bad\">a shock collar\/electronic collar was used<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Obviously the collar was ineffective<\/strong>, and may have even exacerbated the situation, because the dog had to endure\u00a0 a large dose of pain as he was escaping. Do not use electronic collars. If\u00a0your dog\u00a0goes out regularly with you,\u00a0he will be less interested in escaping to find adventure on\u00a0his own. <\/p>\n<p>Mental exercise is also important. Maybe someone accidentally stepped on his tail, maybe\u00a0he just wanted to play and accidentally knocks over the child, maybe &#8230; <\/p>\n<p><strong>there could be lots of maybes<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>That is why a dog, no matter the size, should <strong>always <\/strong>be supervised when interacting with young children. A dog should only be <a href=\"http:\/\/shibashake.com\/dog\/off-leash-neighborhood-dogs\">allowed off-leash<\/a> in off-leash parks and <strong>only if <\/strong>you have good voice control over him.<\/p>\n<p>Dogs naturally interact a lot with their mouths. What we do with our hands, a dog does with his mouth. <\/p>\n<p>In addition, a\u00a0dog is not born with a full understanding of all the rules and laws of our very human society. It is up to us to teach those rules to our dog. <\/p>\n<p>Teach your dog <a href=\"http:\/\/shibashake.com\/dog\/bite-inhibition\">bite inhibition<\/a>, and teach him that it is <a href=\"http:\/\/shibashake.com\/dog\/puppy-biting-tips-solutions\">unacceptable to bite on humans<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"alignspace\"><\/div>\n<h2>Why do dogs attack?<\/h2>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Frequently because\u00a0of human error and negligence.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\nThe dog is a gentleman; I hope to go to his heaven, not man&#8217;s.<br \/>\n<cite>~~[ Mark Twain, letter to W.D.
