My Dog Training Mistakes

Dog training is often counter-intuitive. When I started learning how to train my dogs, I found a lot of conflicting information. In addition, so-called dog experts would give inconsistent dog training advice and sugar-coat the facts. As a result, I made many mistakes with my first dog, but I also learned a lot from him. Here are some of the most common dog training mistakes that we make.

Dog Threat Down – Ripgut, Foxtail, and Bromus Malus

If you plan on bringing your dog to the park or on hiking trails, make sure to look out for some of these evil weeds. During the hot summer months, the seeds dry up and become extremely sharp. When a dog passes through these dry weeds, the seeds hook onto his fur, and can easily pierce through skin, paws, ears, and even eyes. If inhaled through the nose, they can cause havoc in a dog’s nasal cavity.

Shiba Diary – Visit to the Vet

Shiba Inu Diary – Sephy’s first visit to the vet. The vet had to muzzle Shiba Sephy in order to give him his shots and a physical examination. At the end of the visit, the vet told us to return Sephy because he had a very unbalanced temperament. I later learned that many Shibas are very sensitive to restraint/handling. In addition, their natural mouthiness and stubbornness make them poor patients during visits to the vet.

Shiba Diary – Sirius Puppy Class

Shiba Inu Diary – Sephy’s exciting first day at puppy class. There were some fun puppies around that Sephy really enjoyed roughhousing with, but best of all there was another Shiba Inu pup! In addition to play, Shiba Sephy also learned to have play-breaks and follow some play rules so that he does not lose control, as puppies so often do.

Some important starter supplies for a new puppy include an adult sized crate with dividers, good quality puppy food, lots of interactive chew toys, grooming supplies, and potty training supplies. Puppies grow up very quickly, so remember to have fun with your new fur ball and take a lot of pictures.
