Warren Buffett

Awesome 2-legs elder.

Ok, ok, I *know* I have been watching too much CNBC, but what can I say? I've been a bit bored lately and 2-legs on CNBC seem to be very excited about something lately. It is probably because the stock market is dropping faster than a Shiba can run. Which is pretty dang fast!

A few days ago, a very awesome 2-legs, called Warren Buffett was on CNBC. The thing that struck me most about this 2-legs is that he "says it like it is", just like us dogs. Now of course, I could probably tell a lot more about this 2-legs if I could smell him, especially around his rear areas, but based on tone and pitch alone I could tell that he is similar to a doggie elder. A doggie elder is someone who has been to many places, has done many things, and knows a lot about life but still has a healthy dose of humility. A doggie elder is one who is very comfortable in his place in things, and is actively working to support and give back to the doggies around him. This 2-legs seems just like that. Maybe that is why other 2-legs are willing to give up hundreds of thousands of bones just to talk to the Buffett elder. If I were one of the 2-legs, I would vote for him to lead all 2-legs. The 2-legs really need some leadership lately, and since they won't listen to me, the elder Buffett will have to do.

Sephy's Wisdom: I think the Buffett elder should have been born a dog. His talents are just wasted on the 2-legs!

Housing Downturn
June 27, 2008
If bones would rain from the sky, I would save some up to help pay for our new den.

I have been watching a lot of CNBC business news on t.v. lately. Den Female has it on all the time so I watch it with her. 2-legs on t.v. has been talking a lot about a housing downturn. As I understand it, dens are not worth as many bones today as they were yesterday. Den female tells me that *our den* is worth much less now so maybe we shouldn't have gotten a new den last year. I don't know about that. I really enjoy our new den. I get a lot more freedom and there is a lot of space for me to run around in. I would give up many bones for the new den, especially if I had extra bones in storage.

Also since moving to the new den, we have had more space to add a new pack member - my sister Shania. I would give up many bones for her. She is sometimes *spoilt* but she is extra fun to play with and we have spent much time wrestling, chasing, and tugging on toys. I suppose it all comes down to whether the rewards of the new den justifies the cost of giving up all those bones. For me, the rewards are great and I am willing to tighten my belt, to borrow a 2-legs' saying, for it. Besides, the lean look suits me, and all the babes (2-legs and 4-legs) are always looking in my direction!

Sephy's Wisdom: There is no point saving up too many extra bones if you end up not using them.

Do Dogs Need Other Dogs
June 20, 2008
Its no fun being king if you don't have any subjects.
Shiba Inu Sephy and Siberian Shania hanging out on the grass.

My silly sister is often times a pest. She bugs me when I am resting and she is always stealing my food. That got me to thinking if I even wanted her around. Indeed, do I even want other dogs around. I decided to pose this question to my Shiba buddies on Shibatalk and Shiba Inu Meetup. Being Shibas, they had some very interesting things to say.

  1. All Shibas agree that we like having our 2-leg subjects around. They are useful for opening food cans, rubbing tummies, and other miscellaneous tasks. My friends and I often miss our 2-legs when they are gone during the day. We would like 2-legs to spend more time with us, play with us, and take us to interesting places. We are Shiba. We have a lot of energy!
  2. Contrary to common belief, we do not like *all* dogs. Some dogs are downright annoying. For the most part, I love my sister Shania and I like having her around. She is naughty sometimes, but I took care of her since she was little, so I let her get away with a lot of things. We play well together and we like wrestling, chasing, and tug. Everyone spoils little Shania because she means well, and she looks very cute with her big ears. I am glad 2-legs brought me to meet Shania when she was young, and made sure that we liked each other before taking her home.
  3. I am very glad that Den Female and Pungent One takes me to many places. I am a bit annoyed with all the rules, but I suppose if that is the price I have to pay, then I am willing to pay it. Sometimes I complain, but Den Female explained to me that the world of the 2-legs is very different from the world of the 4-legs. And since I live in the 2-leg world, I have to follow the rules or I may get hurt or accidentally hurt others.
  4. When I was really young I remember being less annoyed with rude dogs. Now that I am older, I still like meeting new friends, but if they challenge me, do not expect me to back down. No Shiba backs down, even to other Shibas!

Sephy's Wisdom: While we don't need other dogs around, it can be a lot of fun to have like-minded dogs to play with. I suppose I will keep my sister ... for now.

Mari and Her Three Puppies

Move over Labradors, Goldens, and Huskies. Shibas are now in the movies and we cannot be stopped. After this, I expect we will conquer Hollywood and it will be over for the other wussy movie breeds!

Red Star Cafe has a good description of the movie including a trailer.

This site has the full story.

A variety of asian online DVD stores are selling English subtitled versions including HK Flix, YesAsia, and DVD Asian . Release date is listed as June 27th-30th. I have never bought a DVD in my life so I don't know how good these sites are.

Doggie Daycare

Could have been fun.

Today I got to go to what seemed like a doggie hotel. It was very exciting at first because there were many interesting smells and there were many new dogs that I wanted to go and meet. But I was taken to a room and left there on my own. I tried to tell everyone that they should let me out to be with the other dogs but nobody seemed to want to listen. I really missed being home and being with Den Female.

Finally, after a bit someone came and took me out with a group of other dogs. I was very excited, and started to show everyone else how to have fun. However, everytime I started my fun-Shiba-moves, I got stopped. I thought it would be fun, but it is really turning out to be a downer of a time. I get to have much more fun at home with my sister Shania and Den Female.

After a whole day of this, I had had more than enough. I couldn't wait to get home. I was also starting to feel sick. Must have caught some bad bug from all the stress and lack-o-fun. Next time I am staying home!

Sephy's Wisdom: Things are a lot less fun when your family is not around.

Shania's Surgery

What a brave girl.
Tripod Husky Shania

I have been sad lately. My sister Shania keeps going missing for days at a time and when she comes home I don't get to play with her. Also, her left front foot has been looking a bit strange. The other day there was a strange metal device on it.

Den female noticed that I have been moping around and she tried to explain things to me. She said that Shania was born with a bone defect (radial head luxation) where the bones in her front leg did not connect properly and was growing crooked. She said that Shania may have gotten this when she was pulled from her mom's womb because she was a c-section baby. I asked her if Shania was going to be alright, but my question made Den female look sad. She said that we tried to straighten the leg using the wierd metal device, but that didn't work because there was already too much cartilage damage. The surgeon thought it was best to remove the leg.

I don't know too much about straightening legs, but I like bones and I know that I will be much happier when my sister stays home all the time, whether she has 3 legs or 4 legs.

Sephy's Wisdom: 2-legged ones only have 2 legs and they seem to do fine with that.

My New Sister: Shania
December 28, 2007
She is a Cutie!
Shania

I could sense that today was special. Pungent One and Female of the Den were both smelling very excited about something. They have probably gotten something good for me. I just minded my own business and waited. It wasn't too long before something arrived! There were two females and a small, girl, canine. She was pretty cute for a non-Shiba. I jumped in for a closer look, but Den Female held me back. I protest!! In the loudest possible way! The little non-Shiba girl seemed timid and overwhelmed by my awesome visage. Who can blame her? After a bit I settled down next to Den Female and examined timid girl from afar. Den Female tried to entice timid girl over with some of my kibble and again she jumped back once she entered my corona of greatness. After a bit, the two new females left, but timid girl stayed behind. It was then that I approched her and assured her that while I am awesome and great from a distance, I am more Godly than ever close-up and she may bask in my presence if she so desired. Then we started playing and I am a big happy camper! Shiba Grins All the Way!!

Sephy's Wisdom: If you wait long enough, lots of good things will come.

Foxtails

Nature in my nose!

I got something really nasty in my nose today and started sneezing blood. It was very painful and I kept sneezing but the thing didn't want to come out. Den Female and Pungent One got really stressed which made me even more scared. Then, they quickly loaded me into the moving den and took me to what they called the "emergency room". It seemed like another yucky vet place to me.

We stayed there for a long while and Pungent One took me for a very nice walk. There were a fair number of people about and some very interesting smells. However, that stupid thing was still in my nose, and sometimes it was very irritating. Finally, they took me into a small room and the yucky vet came to poke and prod at me. I DO NOT like that and I am not afraid to show it.

After that things got really hazy. I must have fallen asleep because when I woke up, I felt really yucky, and my throat and nose were really sore. Vet visits always end up bad for me ><

Kai my best friend

I am in love! Today we went over to visit our neighbor and I got to meet their new puppy Kai. She is the friendliest, goofiest, best girl I have ever met. Even though she is not a Shiba, she plays like one! I wanted to invite her home to my pack but I suppose she already has a lovely family. I am going to go over and play with her everyday!

SPCA
August 15, 2007
ZenZen and many other good friends.
Cute Shiba

Today I got to go to an awesome place called the SPCA. There were many dogs there and many interesting smells. There was also a nice, enclosed, play area that I got to romp around in off-leash. This play area had many balls, frisbees, ropes and interesting objects strewn about so I had lots of fun. It wasn't long before I saw this really hairy dog called Zen. His face looked a bit like mine. True to his name, he was very calm, so it was a challenge to get him to play with me. Zen just kept wanting to be with the 2-legged ones. I don't know why. 4 legs are superior to 2 legs! I started doing my best to encourage Zen to play; I jumped up on him, I ran around, I play-bowed, I did my air-butt move, and finally Zen started romping around with me! Persistence always pays off ^.^

The Dog Park

Story of a little Shiba called Runty

I have been visiting this interesting place that has lots of dogs around. Most of the time there are many interesting, fun, friends to play with. Sometimes though, there are some dogs that really don't want to interact with me. I really don't understand this. Everyone *loves* to play with a Shiba; especially a Shiba like me! I try to tell them this, but sometimes they get annoyed and try to tell me to get lost. But I keep trying. I don't want them to lose out on this golden opportunity.

Today, there was another Shiba at the park. He looked like me but he was very small so I was very curious. At first he was in the small, yippy dog area but then he came over where I was; presumably to pay homage to me. After all, I am bigger and better. I went over to say *hi*, but the little runt got all snarky with me, growled at me, and showed teeth. I suppose since he is so small, he might be a bit afraid of my awesome aspect. I went over more slowly and tried to greet him again. He got all snarky again and Den Female and Pungent One came over and stopped me. This happened a few more times and I decided to give the runty Shiba a little time before my next approach.

After about 15 minutes, I figured the little one had probably calmed down, so I put on my best face and went over to say hi. The little punk actually had the audacity to come at me with teeth barring. I corrected him by simply sitting on him. I was after all, more than double his size.

I thought I handled it pretty well and with minimal violence but then all hell suddenly broke loose. The 2-legs that belonged to little runty one came charging over, shouting and wildly waving their arms. One of them actually dared to lay hands on my royal body. I was shocked at his stupid behavior. Lucky for him, Pungent One came over and told him sternly to unhand me. Runty's follower-#1 did as he was told, but kept on yipping. At that point, we had all had enough so we left little Runty and his silly family to their yipping and yapping.

Sephy's Wisdom: Never grab an unknown dog; especially a Shiba, unless you want to get bitten. Little doggies should stay in the little doggie area and not mess with the big boys - ROAR!

The Dog Walker Saga - Part 3
April 27, 2007
Conclusion

It has been many weeks and I have had many battles with female that walks dogs. I am definitely wearing her down. Today, I tried the screaming maneuver in front of my house. Den female seemed a bit worried. I sensed that she was thinking of not letting me go. But then female that walks dogs picked me up and loaded me into the moving den. Onto the battlefield!

When we reached the wooded area, I went through my usual repertoire of ninja moves. I could tell that female that walks dogs was losing her cool. But wait ... what is this device?! Suddenly she put this metal chain around my neck. It was very painful when she snapped this *new* torture device.

I decided to play it cool and again lull her into a false sense of security, but she did not take it off. I suppose 2-legs are not always stupid. Worse, female that walks dogs did not take me home but made me stay with her all day. Then she took me to *her* home. Is this to be my life?! NOOOOooooooo. Save me Shiba Gods!!

Luckily, after a bit, female that walks dogs took me back to *my* home. After this, I never had to go with female that walks dogs again. Whenever I saw her in my neighborhood I made sure to let her know that I wanted her gone! The Gods must have answered my prayer. I must be a good Shiba!

Sephy's Wisdom: [Note from Den Female: Prolonged use of choke chains can injure your dog. This is especially true for Shibas because they have short tracheas. I stopped dog walking sessions because I did not want the walker to use a choke chain on my Shiba. In addition, his behavior was getting worse because he was practising bad behaviors during his walks and the walker was not able to effectively control him without the choke chain and muzzle.]

The Dog Walker Saga - Part 2

We meet again!

Female that smells like many dogs is here again. Today I will show her who is boss!

Everything progressed as usual, but suddenly, many dog female took out this *thing* that she put over my mouth so that I had to keep it closed. I couldn't bite and I couldn't scream. Unfair! I must open a store to sell these things except it would be for the 2-legs. See how *they* like it.

I decided to behave really well so as to instill a false sense of confidence in many dog female. It worked! After walking a bit in the wooded area many dog female took the *mouth thing* off.

FREEDOM!!!

So I let go my most piercing, shrill, scream. It was quite beautiful. I liked it so much, I let go another one, and then another, and so on. Many dog female was very startled and embarrassed. She tried to make me stop by doing the leash snap thing. I persevered! My Shiba spirit cannot be defeated!!

Many dog female tried to put on the mouth thing again. DOH - how stupid does she think I am?! She quit after I mouthed on her arm a bit and showed off my beautiful teeth.

VICTORY!!!

Sephy's Wisdom: Shiba screams are wicked powerful. Must remember that for future use.

The Dog Walker Saga - Part 1
March 27, 2007
Whee - Walking in a pack for the first time.
It was very exciting today. A female that smells like many dogs came to visit. I followed her around everywhere because she smelt so interesting. Then, lucky me, she loaded me into her moving den where I got to meet five other friends! Some of them didn't like me very much - I think they are just jealous of my Shiba-ness. I'm not worried - if I pester them enough, I'm sure they will come around.

After a little while, the moving den came to a stop and we found ourselves in a nice wooded area. I was very excited and wanted to jump right out and run around and play. However, the doggie-smelling female stopped me and snapped my collar really hard. This collar snap thing is getting REALLY annoying. First my followers, then this new "female". Do they have classes where they teach all 2-legs this stupid maneuver?! I decided it was time to tell them to stop it. So I turned around, bit the leash, and tried to pull it out of doggie female's grasp. It was an epic battle!! Next time I will have to sell tickets. Finally I decided it would be more interesting to explore the new wooded area so I gave up the ghost. This battle may be over ... but the war has just begun.

Sephy's Wisdom: Punishment may work initially, but eventually it just becomes annoying. My Shiba spirit is too strong to be defeated by silly forceful maneuvers.

Neutering
February 28, 2007
Snip, Snip - Yikes! They are gone!!
Sephy with E-collar

Today I was loaded up and brought to where the white coated lady lives. I was all ready to fight her and all her amazons, but they were giving me treats so I was happy to be with them. Suddenly I felt wozzy. Did they drug my treats?! Those sneaky, sneaky females! I am losing consciousness ... need chicken soup.

Slowly I awaken. Something seems different. Yikes - I have this stupid thing around my neck. I feel itchy, wozzy, and yucky. White coated lady really sucks. Wait ... something else is missing too ... NOOOOooooooo!!

Sephy's Wisdom: I don''t miss them. They just got in the way!! [Note from followers: Neutering prevents health issues down the road and can help with aggression. Other dogs are also less likely to aggress on a neutered dog.]

Leash Correction
February 16, 2007
Pain in the Neck
Walking has not been very fun lately. Both the pungent-one and the female in my pack have started to "snap" my leash during walks. Sometimes this happens very often. Its painful especially when the pungent male does it. When the female one does it, it is merely annoying. I am getting really irritated by this. I will give them the benefit of the doubt for now because they don't know any better, but if this continues I'm going to have to show them the error of their ways. It is exactly behavior like this that makes them strange, incomprehensible, and untrustworthy.

Sephy's Wisdom: Try positive reinforcement techniques first BEFORE resorting to punishment based techniques. Punishment techniques can result in bad side effects that may come back and bite you in the ass ^.^

Bath Time
February 10, 2007
Water + Shampoo + Tub = Not Our Friend
Sephy in Water

I really hate bath time. Initially the pungent male tried to lure me into the cold and small space with cheese. I like cheese - but even cheese is not good enough to make me go into the cold, wet place. The pungent one then carried me in. Then, the female one came in and poured water all over me!! She is not very nice today >< Then there was white funny smelling stuff, and more water, and I don't know what else because I must have passed out from the sheer awfulness of the experience. I remembered shaking water all over the male and female - they deserve it!!

Sephy's Wisdom: It is scary to have water and funny smelling white stuff put on you in a confined space. Maybe 2-legs should consider doing this in a larger, more open, space?! As you can see from the picture, I'm fine playing in the lake with ducks.

Nail Clipping
January 30, 2007
Nail Clipping = Scream! Run Away! Scream! Run Away! recurse until nail clipper = NONE
Today I had one of the most frightening experiences of my life. It started out pleasant enough, the nice smelling female was hugging me and giving lots of attention. Then the pungent male came over and paid homage to me as well so things were moving along nicely. Suddenly, they brought out this new toy - or so I thought! First I was curious and smelt it and licked it a bit, but it seemed like a pretty lame toy so I soon lost interest. The female one started touching it to my nails which tickled ^.^ Before I knew what was happening the pungent male held onto me and the female one cut one of my nails. It was painful! Could it be that my followers were revolting against my "benevolent" monarchy?! I was bleeding! I ran around shouting for reinforcements. Finally my followers realized the error of their ways. They came over and put some white stuff over my wound and it got better. Maybe I will forgive them if they give me lots of treats and toys.

Sephy's Wisdom: Never use a nail clipper on a Shiba when you can use a nail grinder. I recommend the Dremel Minimite - no cords to tempt me to pounce and chew on. With a grinder, it is also easier to avoid the quick which means no bleeding which means happy Shiba.

A really cool 2-legged one.
I got to meet a really cool 2-legged one today. So far most of the 2-legs I've met have not been very impressive. Most have erratic energy that reflect fear and submission. Gary, however, is very different. Straight away I could sense that this "one" had a sense of authority. When he tried to put a new "thing" around my neck, I put up a big fuss, but this one just held onto me and was very calm and unafraid. Sensing this I calmed down as well,... the "neck thingy" may not be so bad after all.

My male and female pack followers were also around and they seemed to also get calmer after a howl and yip, noise session with the calm-one. Afterwards, we all went for a walk and it was a lot of fun. I also got to practice my SITs and since I am so good at it I got a lot of cheese - yummy!

Finally, the calm-one picked me up. In general, I hate being picked up by the 2-legs because that seriously curtails my freedom. Also I don't really trust the 2-legs not to drop me - after all they are inferior with only 2 legs. Everyone knows that "4 legs goooooddd, 2 legs baaaadddd". So, of course I showed my displeasure by squirming and showing teeth. I also put my teeth near calm-one's neck to get him to back off. But, strangely, he didn't, and his energy was strong and calm throughout. I started to relax as well. Being held by calm-one wasn't too bad after all.

Sephy's Wisdom: Wtih us dogs, it is all about inner energy. We can sense what you are truly "feeling" so you can't "pretend". To really make a difference, you must change your inner energy and true self.

Fun Fun Fun!
Today was just awesome! I was a bit apprehensive at first when I realized I had shamelessly allowed myself to be lured into the moving den again (I'm such a sucker for hot-dogs), but this time the pungent male actually took us to a fun spot. When we arrived, I was very excited because there were several canines hanging about. My own pack of fur-less, giant 2-legged ones are fine, but nothing compares to another canine. Best of all there was another Chosen One there - a Shiba called Ronin. I got into a fun wrestling match with Ronin right away. I had to stop and do silly exercises from time to time but I didn't mind because it was so much fun to play with another Chosen One (and I made sure everyone knew I was more interested in playing by singing my "Play with Me NOW" song frequently and loudly). The other canine kids were ok, but they couldn't really keep up with us. Shibas RULE!

Sephy's Wisdom: My friends from class tell me that I can be a bit rude when playing. I will try to tone it down a little bit for the wimps so that play can continue, but really - don't they realize how honored they are to receive the attention of a Chosen One?

No lame technique like that is going to work on a Shiba!
I am getting more used to the pungent male and the not-too-smelly female. They are not very good pack followers but I am being patient about teaching them how to pay homage to me. A disturbing trend has started where they are holding me down on my back everytime I do certain things that get them frustrated. They must have learnt it from that white coated amazon thing and her helpers. No worries - I put up a great fuss (note: screaming and mouthing works really well) and I can sense their energy weakening everytime I do that. I will be a good pack leader and be patient with them ... for now.

Sephy's Wisdom: You can "pretend" to be the boss, but your weak energy ain't going to fool anyone. Especially not a Shiba!

Visit to the Vet
December 26, 2006
Vet = RUN AWAY or DIE FIGHTING
I am settling into my new den. Life is pretty sweet because I get to do whatever I want. Things were moving along nicely when suddenly I was packed up into the moving den again. It wasn't long before we reached a new and interesting scent location. I was busy picking up all the calling cards of my canine friends when I was rudely pulled away and led into a new area that didn't smell very good. Nevertheless I put on a good face because I got to meet some new female subjects who made a fuss over me. Then ... in came the white coated female. I could smell that she was trouble. I tried to get away, but one of my new female subjects suddenly turned betrayer! She held onto me while the white coated one poked and prodded me. At one point they forced a contraption onto my snout that prevented me from keeping them at bay with my fierce puppy teeth - I'll make sure never to allow that again! I fought for my life but alas my 10 pound frame was no match for the over 100 pound amazons holding me down. I will not go down without a fight!!

Sephy's Wisdom: Everybody else knows the program and gives me lots of treats and hugs. If the vet would just FOLLOW THE PROGRAM, I won't have to go ninja on her ass next time.

Leaving home
December 22, 2006
The day I left my mom, brother, and sister
Young Sephy

Today started like any other day but I could sense a certain something in the air. And of course I was right, because it wasn't long before a strange male and female came to visit. Everyone was making a fuss over them so it was pretty exciting. They kept wanting to check me out so I strutted my stuff. After all, I am an exceptional specimen of my breed and really of all dogs.It wasn't long before they to put a "thing" around my neck. I of course expressed my outrage. How dare they sully my pristine, primitive look! Finally they got the "thing" on me but it took several of them to tag team me - oh the injustice! It only went downhill from here because before I knew it I was loaded up into a wierd looking moving den with the strange male and female. Then - everything I knew and loved was left behind.

Sephy's Wisdom: Sometimes life just kicks you in the ass. I spit on life!
